Introduction of the Pre-University Program for International Students,

Beijing Foreign Studies University (2019)

[Program Introduction]

To provide international students with a foundation for studying at BFSU, we now offer a Pre-University Program that adopts multiple intensive teaching methods and carries out strict teaching management to help students improve language proficiency, timely respond to the learning effect and make adjustments accordingly, so as to improve students’ Chinese listening, speaking, reading, writing and translation skills. After five months of intense training, students can acquire equal knowledge and skills as those gained from one academic year’s study in a common language training program, and thus can meet the entrance requirements of Chinese-taught degree programs in a short period of time.

Targeting and distinctive teaching plans and curriculum are developed to improve the learning effect and shorten the needed time for taking a language test.

The program is established on the basis of educational resources of BFSU. As the most prestigious foreign language university in China known for the longest history and most languages taught, BFSU has attracted a large number of experts and scholars that have strong academic backgrounds in language, literature, culture, translation and other related areas.

Diversified optional courses

To match up international students with requirements of studying in Chinese-taught bachelor’s degree programs, our program provides various Chinese-taught optional courses to help students adapt to university-level studies in China.

Better guarantee to get admitted

Students who have good performances in daily studies and final exams, and have passed multiple assessments will be given a preference to be recommended to enter Chinese-taught bachelor’s degree programs at BFSU.

 [Application Requirements]

The applicant should meet basic requirements prescribed in Introduction of Programs for 2019, BFSU;

The applicant should be over 18 years of age or older, and is recommended to be below the age of 26;

The applicant should be a non-Chinese citizen who holds a valid ordinary passport of a foreign country;

Graduation from high school is required;

Good health and proper behaviors are required; Agreeing to comply with laws in China and regulations of BFSU is required.

 [Curriculum]

Required courses (26 hours/week): Chinese reading, listening & speaking, oral Chinese, reading & writing, HSK prep courses and other courses would be provided according to students’ Chinese proficiency level and specific arrangements of each semester.

Optional courses (4 hours/week): Chinese skills (Hanzi or Chinese characters, phonetics, audio-video courses, etc.), culture (history, literature, culture, etc.), special training (business, translation, etc.) and other courses would be provided and taught in different classes, and students can decide which class to attend based on their own cultivation plans.

 [Application Procedures]

Deadlines: January 10th for the Spring Semester, June 10th for the Fall Semester

Required materials

Information and documents required for online application include but are not limited to:

1. Personal information;

2. Guardian guarantee;

3. Copy of the first page of valid passport;

4. High-school graduation/pre-graduation certificate: If the certificate is written in neither Chinese nor English, a Chinese or English translation should be submitted at the same time, which should be notarized by notary authority or embassy of the country where the applicant is;

5. Full high-school transcript: If the transcript is written neither in Chinese nor English, a Chinese or English translation should be submitted at the same time, which should be notarized by notary authority or embassy of the country where the applicant is;

6. Personal statement: Should be written in Chinese or English, and should contain education experience, motivation to apply, previous Chinese learning experience and the current Chinese proficiency level;

7. Application fee: 400 RMB/person, could be paid via the online application system. Applications without being paid would not be proceeded. Whether or not the applicant is admitted, the application fee would not be refunded;

8. Non-compulsory materials: Include but are not limited to college entrance examination transcript, award-winning certificates, HSK transcript or other Chinese proficiency certificates, or any other materials that may be helpful to the application.

The applicant should submit information truthfully, and should be responsible for the authenticity, accuracy, completeness and effectiveness of all submitted materials. Once falsification is found out, the applicant will be disqualified for registering and learning and should be responsible for any unfavorable consequences.

 [Time of enrollment] Spring semester: March; fall semester: September.

 [Duration and credit hours] 20 weeks, 600 hours

 [Tuition fee] 32,000 RMB, should be paid off one-time at the time of official registration

 [Notification of application results] Applicants would be notified of application results in February (for spring semester) or July (for fall semester), and thus should regularly check email box (of the submitted email address). All important notifications would be sent through email.

 [Medical insurance] All international students at BFSU should buy the comprehensive insurance for people coming to China (including personal accident insurance and hospitalization medical insurance) prescribed by our university by the time of official registration. Students could buy medical insurance and finish related procedures on the registration day, or buy insurance online after being admitted (purchase procedures would be sent together with the Letter of Admission). Insurance premiums: 300 RMB for half year, 600 RMB for one year. Insurance is a required material when registering, so students who haven’t or refuse to buy medical insurance would be rejected from registration.

 [Accommodation fees] Students cannot book any specific room. BFSU will assist students in finding dorms on campus. Room type would depend on remaining resources. Accommodation fees are as follows:

Students who decide not to live on campus should arrange accommodation in advance. Those who choose to live in local communities should go to local police station accompanied by the house owner to get a temporary residence registration certificate within 24 hours upon arriving in China. Registration and visa procedures would be proceeded only after these students provide valid residence registration certificate.

 [Visa] Admitted students should apply for X1 or X2 study visa with the Letter of Admission and Visa Application for Study in China (JW202) in Chinese embassies. According to Chinese law, students who hold X1 visa should change the X1 visa into Student Residence Permit within 30 days upon arriving in China.
